breakfast tableBREAKFASTS

We provide a selection of freshly-baked home made breads and muffins, and being a veggie, Andrea also offers a vegetarian cooked breakfast. Meat-eaters do not fear, the traditional full English breakfast is also available. Our local organic and health-food supplier, Organica, provides us with organic produce wherever possible, and we also visit local farmers' markets regularly for specialist sausages, field mushrooms, etc. Local allotment holders and smallholders are also used from time to time for our fruit and veg. Locally-produced fruit juices, Cheddar strawberries (in season) and free-trade tea and coffee are also used. Very little of what you eat here comes from your standard supermarket shelf.

Our recently-refurbished kitchen is where your food is prepared, and most of the cooking is done on our traditional Rayburn cooker (Agas and Rayburns are made by the same people). Food is said to taste better cooked on an Aga/Rayburn because the cooking method allows food to retain its natural succulence and flavour.

WEEKDAY OFF-PEAK BREAKFASTS

Andrea has gone back to teaching, on a part time basis from September 2007. We were also seeing a lot of fresh produce going to waste in the quieter off-peak weekdays. So as a result, we are not serving cooked breakfasts on weekday term-time mornings.

Mornings that cooked breakfasts would not be available in 2008 are: Weekdays Jan 7th to Feb 15th, Weekdays Feb 25th to March 20th, Weekdays March 25th to April 4th, Weekdays April 21st to May 23rd (5th May is OK though), and Weekdays June 2nd to July 23rd.

On these days an equally substantial self-service continental breakfast will be provided instead for the same price, available anytime you like from 8am to 9.30am. This includes cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast and preserves, pastries, cheese, ham etc. along with tea and coffee. If the availability of a "Full English"on weekday (schoolday) mornings is important to you, you may want to consider alternative accommodation.

We have a drinks licence here and in depending on stocks you will be able to sample local bottled ales and wine (out of the peak season we run stocks low though).

Frank's RestaurantEVENING MEALS

We are surrounded by many pubs and restaurants - all within walking distance - offering a wide choice of food and drink.

The White Hart and The Cox's Mill have a good selection of pub meals, The Riverside Inn and Bath Arms have restaurant-style menus and kids' play areas, whilst the tucked-away Gardeners Arms, is well worth seeking out for its varied restaurant menu. And Frank's Restaurant, which has gained a very good reputation since opening in 2003 is right opposite our front gate.

We also have two excellent Tandooris, Thai and Chinese cuisine and a great fish and chip restaurant close by. There are also numerous ice cream parlours, cafés and tea rooms, and we also now have a pizza and kebab facility, so it is very difficult to go hungry in Cheddar! All of these are less than 10 minutes walk away, most much nearer.

ANDREA'S MUFFIN and BREAD RECIPES

Many visitors ask for the muffin recipes - here are a couple of books that Andrea often uses for ideas:

Muffins Fast and Fantastic (Reimer)
Morning Bakes (Collister)

And many of the recipes for the different types of fresh bread that are available here every day are taken from:

The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook (Shapter)
The New Bread Machine Book (Lambert)
